Acting Auditions

Unless they were born into a family of famous and successful Hollywood actors, most average people heading out week after week in search of auditions are struggling, along hoping the next batch of auditions will bring the one that gives them that one big break they have been praying for. Auditions can be a challenge and can take some getting used to, but the payoff can be great when actor and audition do come together.

It goes without saying but needs to be said anyway; preparation is the key to a good audition experience. Prepare all the details of your audition day well in advance. Get your hair done, select your clothing, and know where you’re going and how to get there. Those are the obvious audition preparations, but you‘ll also need some study prep too. Check out the company and the directors online to learn as much as you can about them. Find out the names of the people you will be auditioning for. See if you can obtain a copy of the audition script or sides you’ll be reading from in advance. If you need a monologue or a song to sing, make sure you’ve got them covered long before audition day comes around.

Get up early and get to the audition early. It shows a measure of respect and professionalism when people do not have to wait for you. Be polite and friendly to everyone you meet at the audition, hopeful talent and crew alike. People who are friendly and work well with others land more roles. Smile and try to project a calm confidence when your turn comes. Make sure you understand what it is you are to do and ask any questions you may have before you start your audition. Remember to make eye contact with the directors whenever possible.

Don’t take it personally if the audition directors are aloof or even a bit rude. They are seeking people that fit their production and hoping you are the one they need. But the audition is an entertainment business process and directors often do not have a lot of time to be personal. Be yourself, project your personality, and think of the entire audition as a learning opportunity that allows you to hone your skills as a performer.
